Whisper of the Earth
 Das Geflüster der Erde

“The microphone as a finger pointing toward an object so as to make it heard. The same object captured by the same mic, but by someone else, becoming other, because it’s someone else’s fingerprint.” — Brunhild Ferrari

This quote is the central theme of Šepot Zeme (Whisper of the Earth) / Das Geflüster der Erde. It emphasises a simple but profound idea: sound is not only captured, but fundamentally altered by the act of recording, technology and the unique perspective of the person placing the microphones. Each recording bears their unique ‘fingerprint’.

During their one-week stay in Bučení, Philipp Waltinger and Marcus Kestner will explore and record sound environments directly on site and collect their own material. At the same time, they will set up live streams with collaborating artists: Kassem Mosse, Nele Möller, Justin Bennett, Molto and Lowtec. Each artist will present their own acoustic take on different sound environments and objects. All these acoustic perspectives are broadcasted live via Udo Noll’s Radio Earth during their one week residency.

Waltinger and Kestner see sound not just as something to be documented, but as a malleable material. It is something that changes when it is transmitted and manipulated. Šepot Zeme is about what happens in the crucial time between capturing a sound and hearing it, and how each unique perspective changes the whisper of the earth.
